What if you don’t need to calm down?

Dear friends, People often say to me, “I just need to calm down before I speak.” But that’s a myth. You don’t need to be calm. You need to be available — to yourself. Here’s what I mean: When pressure hits — whether you’re giving a presentation, leading a meeting, or simply being seen — your nervous system wants to retreat. You freeze, perform, overthink, or disappear altogether. Centering doesn’t mean pushing that feeling away. And it definitely doesn’t mean bypassing it with a quick breath and a positive affirmation. Centering means staying present enough to feel it… and still choosing to show up. It’s not stillness. It’s self-access.The goal isn’t to feel relaxed — though people I work with often notice that feeling calm happens naturally with more practice. The goal is to feel yourself. To speak from the part of you that’s rooted. Awake. Able to meet the moment without abandoning yourself. That’s what we practice. Not meditation for the sake of floating above — but presence for the sake of coming home to the power within you that you forgot was there. Because when you’re centered, you don’t need to pretend. You just need to be available. And from there, your real voice can speak. With you, Ryan Justin Jackson |
